RARC Meeting September 27, 2018

The regular meeting of the Reelfoot Amateur Radio Club was called to order with 10 members and two guests in attendance. We welcome once again Andy Zimmerman and also Ms. Tonya Pride from Samburg who has harbored an interest in amateur radio for many years. She will be taking her Technician Class license exam this weekend in Alamo, TN. Welcome Tonya and good luck on the exam !

Secretary-Treasurer Noel KJ4UNX was unavailable for this meeting and former Secretary-Treasurer Jamie WB4YDL was pressed into service. The financial statement was reported and old business was reviewed. No comments or questions on the old business were received. New business consisted of announcing that the Christmas holiday gathering will once again be at the Old West Steakhouse and will be scheduled for Saturday, December 8th at 6 PM. The only other business was regarding the upcoming hamfest - Terry KM4EUG had mentioned that he was willing to assist in the sound system to attempt to make better a tough problem - good sound at the armory. Jamie will contact him about this.

Many thanks to Glenn N4MJ and XYL Linda for providing the excellent refreshments for the evening's meeting ! After the break, Glenn gave part 1 of the History of Ham Radio which really began long before radio was a word. He reviewed the contributions to the science of radio beginning with the great scientists and mathematicians such as Volta, Ohm, and Ampere who we know now as units for Ohm's Law. This progressed to the great Maxwell, Faraday, and Hertz who contributed to the science of electromagnetism and eventually radio. Marconi is thought to be the first amateur radio operator and made his famous trans-Atlantic Morse Code transmission. Part 2 of this fascinating journey will be next month at our last organized monthly meeting. See you there !

RARC Meeting August 23, 2018

The August meeting of the Reelfoot Amateur Radio Club was called to order by club president Harrell Davidson WD4LAR at 6:30 pm at the Obion County Library. Twelve members were in attendance with one guest KN4OPZ Randall Flowers. Mr. Flowers joined our group after the meeting was over.

In old business, Jamie Hall WB4YDL’s EME presentation was reviewed. The club hats arrived and were shown to the group.

We skipped new business and went straight to the very great smelling dinner that Ms. June Hall, Jamie Hall WB4YDL’s XYL, prepared for the group. She cooked up an excellent tasty meal that included Chicken and Broccoli Fettuccine, Caesar Salad, rolls, cheese cake and an awesome chocolate ganache. I wish I had brought some bowls to take some home, because it was umm umm good. I know this ham gained at least 5 pounds after this delicious meal.

After refreshments, WD4LAR asked everyone to speak to the group about what Amateur Radio means to them and how it has influenced them. Everyone in the group had a good story to tell.

After the discussion AK4VU Mike Stayton made a motion to adjourn and Bob K9IL seconded the motion.

Hope to see everyone next meeting.

WB4YDL, James Hall handled the new business for this month which was Field Day attendance, scores, issues and possibilities for improvements for 2019. Scores were down this year owing in part to declining sunspots. All stations had sub-par QSO totals most notably the phone station.

Hannah KK4SJF and Steve KK4NNH Clayton had the refreshments this month. They served homemade soup and cornbread with all the fixings that go along with them. For desert they made a chocolate cake and a lemon cake. The meal was truly delicious. This ham is truly glad Mrs. Hannah is a club member because everything she bakes is awesome.

After refreshments, WB4YDL James Hall gave a very in-depth and informative presentation on EME or moon bounce. He discussed the history of EME, how it has evolved since the 50’s, equipment needed to try to make a contact. He also showed us his setup and his EME contact with Hawaii. The video clips of this endeavor to make a EME contact were simply amazing. If you missed the meeting you missed a great presentation.
